This fun day was started in 1996 by John Baur and Mark Summers

Avast and ahoy, the idea is for everyone to literally talk like a pirate during the day, me hearties. Starting as just a fun idea, it was picked up by Dave Barry in his nationally syndicated newspaper column, and from then on it grew and grew to the international phenomenon it is today.

On their official website you will find lots of ideas on how youngsters can celebrate the day including poems and activities.

You will also find English to Pirate translators, pirate name generators, fun and games with a pirate theme, pirate personality tests and much more. In fact their list of links to all things pirate-related is second to none.

This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
